I’ve never seen Star Wars. I don’t know that what’s-his-name is Luke’s father, and I don’t know that Luke and Leia are brother and sister, and I couldn’t name that famous planet they’re all from right now if you had a gun to my head. I mean it.
What haven’t you seen?

I have not seen: Star Wars, Close Encounters, none of the Harry Potters or Indiana Jones.
Feel better?
I’ve never seen The Wizard of Oz.
I’ve never seen Adventures in Babysitting or The Goonies, and for THE LONGEST TIME I hadn’t seen The Princess Bride, though it’s now one of my favorites. These don’t seem like especially iconic movies, probably, but they’re enough to send someone my age into a head-spinning rage.
Almost all of the Oscar-nominated and -winning movies and a lot of movies most people would expect to be included in the “furniture of my mind” for my generation.
Here’s what I came up with (using this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Academy_Award-winning_films), though I know there are more I’m not thinking of:
8 Mile, Almost Famous, American Beauty, Annie Hall (blech! can’t stand Woody Allen), A Beautiful Mind, The Blind Side, Born on the Fourth of July, Brokeback Mountain, Children of a Lesser God, Cleopatra, The Constant Gardener, Driving Miss Daisy, The English Patient, The Exorcist, Fargo, any of the Godfather movies, The Graduate, The Grapes of Wrath, The Great Gatsby, Great Expectations, Hamlet (in any of its forms), The Hours, Howard’s End, The Hurt Locker, The King’s Speech, Leaving Las Vegas, Little Women, the third Matrix movie (though I think only the first one was an Oscar contender), National Velvet, Philadelphia, The Pianist, A River Runs Through It, any of the Rocky movies besides the first one, Rosemary’s Baby, Slumdog Millionaire, The Social Network, Sophie’s Choice, A Star is Born, The Sting, Terms of Endearment, To Kill a Mockingbird, True Grit (any version), West Side Story, Wuthering Heights
So now you know how uncultured I am. :) At least you have the excuse that sci-fi just isn’t your thing (or Kevin Costner).
Here’s the website again, if anyone wants it — it included the parenthesis after it so doesn’t lead you to the site (@#!*%!): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Academy_Award-winning_films
I’ve never seen Jurassic Park or any of the American Pie movies.
I don’t think Christy counts because she clearly just doesn’t watch movies.
Sooooo, I’ve never seen any Indiana Jones, Die Hard, or Godfather movies. I’ve also never seen Sound of Music despite the fact that it’s based on my sister-in-law’s family. Chew on THAT.
I will say that when I finally saw the Godfather movies, a series of cultural references flashed through my head that I’d never understood before – including many Simpsons references.
Same here, I saw the Godfather like 8 months ago and life started making sense.
Oh, Indiana Jones! Or the Godfather movies!
I’ve never seen Broke Back Mountain.
I saw Episodes 1 and 2, but that’s it. I made sure to confess this to my Star Wars-loving guy when he was half asleep so it wouldn’t be a total game over moment. Also never seen the Die Hards or Godfathers, and only a couple of the Indiana Joneses.Seems like if it was a “girl requirement,” I’ve probably seen it, but I’m not sold on that, either.
Yep, got me with the Godfather movies. Haven’t watched Scarface either. Seriously though, you need to watch Star Wars. Seriously.
I’ve never seen ET…
Can anyone top this?
I have never seen:
The Godfather movies
Lord of the Rings movies
Harry Potter movies
Pirates of the Caribbean movies
Any Batman movie since the one with Danny DeVito
Spiderman movies
X-Men movies
Transformers movies
Narnia movies
Stars Wars episodes 2 or 3
Most of the Star Trek movies
Twilight movies
Shrek movies after the first one
Fast and Furious movies
The Scary Movie movies
The Matrix movies after the first one
Hulk, Iron Man, Green Hornet/Lantern, etc. movies
Any Adam Sandler movie except Punch-Drunk Love (although I have seen bits and pieces of other ones on TV)
On the other hand, I think I have seen all of the Muppet movies.
Up until very recently I had not seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which both my husband and my college roommate thought was the unpardonable sin or something. I finally got myself out of eternal damnation by watching it, and I still don’t see what the big deal is.
I still say you saw the re-release of episode 4 with me and a group of our band-friends in high school at the Circleville theater. Not remembering a movie is different than never having seen it. Then again, you also forget that we SAT AT THE SAME TABLE on the first day of kindergarten, so maybe every experience you have with me conveniently leaves your memory immediately.
It’s also too bad you can’t still brag about never having seen Titanic, since we made you watch it that one time. I sort of wish I could un-see it.
Dan freaked out on me the other night, because I’ve never seen Real Genius, but HE’s never seen The Sound of Music, so I still win.
ALSO, the characters on Star Wars were all from DIFFERENT planets. Just saying.
One of my exes used to play the Titanic scene where everybody dies and the ship sinks — and only that scene — and accompany the movie with screaming sound effects courtesy of his Yamaha keyboard.
I suppose I should have known then that the relationship was doomed to fail…
Ha! That reminds me of how our high school band director once told me and Katie that his favorite part of the movie was the audible cracking sound heard when Kate snapped Leo’s cold, dead hand off of hers before letting him sink into the ocean.
The only reason I saw Star Wars was because I was visiting family when Episode 3 was out, and my options were to go see Star Wars or go fabric shopping with a great-aunt that gripes non-stop in a nasal voice. I did eventually watch 4, 5, and 6, but I couldn’t tell you any details. And I still haven’t seen 1 or 2.
The only Star Trek I’ve seen is the J.J. Abrams reboot, and only because I love Chris Pine a lot. And Zachary Quinto is just awesome. But I really enjoyed that movie and actually own it. I don’t, however, plan to see any of the original movies.
I only watched the first Godfather movie last year, and my friend failed to warn me about the horse head scene because “everybody knows about that.” I didn’t, thankyouverymuch. And I am scarred for life.
I’ve never seen Indiana Jones, The Last Temptation of Christ or Black Swan. And no one wants to watch Black Swan with me anyway because I’ll be such a know-it-all diva about it.
I tried to see The Godfather and got bored, although I probably should have pushed through the first 15 minutes. Oops.
The one where he eats people with fava beans a nice Chianti.
Also, the one you keep recommending I watch w/ the ladies. What’s it called again??!
No Star Wars!?
I sense a great disturbance in the force!
:)
I haven’t seen the last Harry Potter movie or The Help.
I haven’t seen Shawshank Redemption or The Breakfast Club. I also refuse to watch Silence of the Lambs. I suffered through the first Saw movie after much peer pressure, but haven’t seen any of the others.
